Immersion in a Textile Community
Kutch, Gujarat, India, 2025

Bagru, in Northwest India, is renowned for its traditional block printing, a craft passed down through generations using hand-carved wooden blocks and natural dyes from local plants and minerals. My immersion in Bagru provided me with an experiential understanding of this artisanal practice, its cultural significance, and the socio-economic structures that sustain it. I learned how master printers, such as Vijendra and his family, preserve this 500-year-old tradition while engaging local families, highlighting the delicate balance between heritage preservation, sustainable craft, and community livelihoods. Through hands-on experience and observation, I gained insight into the techniques, dedication, and intergenerational knowledge that keep this craft alive today.
