Buriti Fibre in Maranhão, 2025

I travelled to Maranhão to learn about the buriti fibre to expand my knowledge through hands-on experience. Here, my creative process has been guided by hands that carry stories. I discovered the craftsmanship created with buriti fibre, extracted from the leaves of the palm tree that grows along rivers and wetlands.

Nizete and Cláudia welcomed me at the cooperative, and together we talked about stitches, weaves, and the endless possibilities that buriti offers us.  Following each stage up close goes far beyond discovering a new raw material for my work. Watching the braiding take shape is an act of cultivating knowledge, preserving culture, and celebrating Brazilian richness.
