Immersion in a Textile Community
Block Printing in Bagru, 2025
Bagru, in Northwest India, is renowned for its traditional block printing, a craft passed down through generations using hand-carved wooden blocks and natural dyes derived from local plants and minerals. Natalia’s immersion in Bagru went beyond technical learning, revealing the cultural depth and social fabric that sustain this artisanal practice.
Working alongside master printers such as Vijendra and his family, she witnessed how a 500-year-old tradition endures through collective effort, engaging entire local communities. Their practice reflects a delicate balance between heritage preservation, sustainable craftsmanship, and livelihood.
