Immersion in a Textile Community
Kutch, Gujarat, India, 2025
I went to Gujarat to visit some of the region’s textile communities, who work with organic kala cotton and natural dyeing. In each village, I met artisans who cultivate, spin, and weave kala cotton, which is a resilient, rain-fed fibre native to the region.
Their practices are rooted in sustainability and as a lived tradition. From manually operating the wooden looms to preparing natural dyes extracted from local plants, every stage of the process revealed a delicate balance between skill, patience, and respect for nature. I gained a deeper understanding of how textiles can embody culture, ecology, and identity.
This research has broadened not only my technical understanding of kala cotton, but also my appreciation for the communities who preserve these ancestral methods and continue to innovate within them.
